Polyester requires special dyes to colour it hence it is very hard to permanently stain. Cotton is easy to dye hence it is easy to permanently stain. Also, because cotton is easy to dye it tends to lose its colour when repeatedly washed. Modern spun polyester tablecloth and napkins have the feel of cotton and are available in a wide range of colours to suit every occasion and setting.
